Rich and strange journeys to the real
Spaargaren excels in strong melodies and lyricism. Playing fast doesn't win of formlessness, even fast runs reveal their melodical format. Besides that much more freedom is to be heared compared to earlier works. Spaargaren must have felt an inner urge to go that way since he wrote 11 new compositions for 'In The Moment'. One of reasons might be touring together with Cactus Truck during the Young VIP Tour 2012, or the influence of guitarist Guillermo Celano, who's been up front all the time (Jan Jasper Tamboer,

Iman Spaargaren: a busy man, not deprived of outstanding musical qualities, as an instrumentalist as well as a composer. On his newest album all 11 compositions are his writing. The pieces have an almost natural simplicity and sound transparant and spacious due to the line up and the high quality of Spaargaren's bandmembers - guitarist Guillermo Celano, bassist Cord Heineking and drummer Jasper van Hulten. It is nice listenable modern harmonic jazz, which has solos of great stature by the tenorsaxophonist - sometimes on bass clarinet - Spaargaren and guitarist Celano (Jacques Los,
Draaiomjeoren.nl).
Iman Spaargaren hass released several CDs, but In the Moment is his most adventurous so far. The saxophonist from Utrecht was not a publicly pleasing beauty player, but on his latest album he emphatically explores artistic boundaries. Spaargaren recorded eleven compositions of his own and chose top international talents as accompanists in his group Undercurrent. A leading role is played by the uncompromising electric guitar playing of Guilermo Celano, who, besides Spaargaren, makes an important mark on the overall sound. The group plays eagerly and adventurously. The pieces are melodic and harmonious at the core, but the free improvisations sound exciting and daring (Johan Bakker, Nederlands Dagblad ****).
Melody and lyricism are strong features of saxophonist and composer Iman Spaargaren. With clear expositions he wanders on paths leading to adventure without ever getting lost. Melodic sounds on tenor- and soprano saxophone, played by the bandleader with great empathy, are commentated by guitarist Guillermo Celano with his rough sound. Great to see that the different characters of the bandmembers [Celano, Heineking, Baggiani and Spaargaren] fit together so well. Spaargaren put a great band together for sure (Jan Jasper Tamboer, het Parool).
Tight, light-footed playing is a garantee, but it's mainly the compositions that give the album a special quality. Spaargaren experiments with the sound of his compositions and hence suggests multiple emotional layers for solo's. The choice of Celano is obvious, because this guitar player has a extremely big vocabulary of sounds. Despite the variation in moods, the band sounds tight and flexible at the same time. On top of it, the gentlemen prove to be able to swing a great deal.
Spaargaren develops himself into an interesting composer (Jazzism ****).
For whom already had a listen to the freshly released album 'In the Moment' of Iman Spaargaren Undercurrent, the CD release concert was the opportunity to really get convinced. Good bands don't use such an event as disguised sales opportunity, but present a unique moment for the audience to dive into the dynamics, expressiveness and energy of the group (Stefan de Graaf,
Jazzenzo.nl).
